This is the view inside the quadrangle in 1823; the old building is the library which had been built in 1616 "for Academical purposes" and which had well served the Old College through several renovations. The library building was the last building of the Old College to be pulled down (1827). Playfair made this sketch as a commemoration contrasting the old with the new. The library was situated in the southeast corner of the New College quadrangle; the view is north.
